Giveaway: town.
by Jesswf on October 25, 2010
Magpie was lucky enough to get a table for ten at town on Friday night after the first day of our Silver Seasons trunk show. I just can’t get enough of the restaurant and was over the moon when someone (myself) suggested giving away a gift certificate to town.

For my 20th birthday this past July, I decided to have a Birthday Brunch wich took place at the Brookstreet Hotel, and what a great idea that was!
First off, the Brookstreet Hotel is chic and fabulous. With its modern decor and classy feel.
Secondly, the brunch menu could not have been more perfect. With an array of delicious choices ranging from French baguette toast, citric zest and banana topping with Grand Marnier whip cream to Brandy painted, brown sugar cured smoked salmon with maple whisky crème fraîche and a dessert table which consisted of mini french pastries and much more!
It was an amazing dining experience and birthday in one! I was surrounded by great company and great food! What more could a girl ask for!
I for one am a strong believer in great dining, you only live life once, so treat yourself to the finer things in life!

That sounds like a great birthday! for those of you unfamiliar with Brookstreet Hotel, it’s a luxury hotel in Kanata, I just visited their site http://www.brookstreet.com/
it looks pretty amazing

I must comment on this blog as this past May 23rd I celebrated a wonderful birthday with my most favorite people in my life… My son Aiden, husband Mike, Soul sister Mellissa and her family along with my most amazing friends Sue, Tamara, Pete & Nora. We enjoyed a special evening of great food & laughs at Fratelli’s in Kanata. I recieved lots of beautiful gifts from Magpie as I had just recieved a new addition to my jewlery collection thanks to a great friend Jennifer… “Thomas Sabo” bracelet. The evening was topped off by two very special gifts… One from mmy 5 year old son Aiden who had bought his mom a Nemo
charm. Aidey and I have watched finding
Nemo hundreds of times and always enjoyed a
great snuggle while watching. The second gift
was that I had made it to 6 months pregnant
with great amnio results… We were having
another boy!
This past September 5th 2010 our big boy Jaxon arrived…. Happy and healthy weighing in @ 10 lbs 13 oz.
And even better… This Friday October 29th will be my loving husbands 38th birthday!

This summer, I had a two week program with my friends in the Laurentians where I only had incredibly inedible cafeteria food to eat.
After a long night of talking, we decided to make ourselves dinner. We walked all the way to the nearest town to do the groceries and came back with pork chops, fresh vegetables, risotto and wine. It was a quaint dinner but one of the most memorable nights we had together since we collectively put effort and love into making ourselves something good and pleasurable. We ate on a tiny picnic table and talked until morning.
Dinners like that really make you really realise how little things can be important. It’s nothing big, but it’s very, very special.

Sounds lovely, and like the perfect intimate dinner to wrap up a two week program with!

3 years ago my (now) husband and I made a new years resolution to eat at all of the restaurants featured in Ottawa Magazine’s top 10. And what a delicious year it was!
Every year since we’ve kept on top of this list and tried any new one’s that get added to the list.
The latest issue has 8 that we have yet to try (including Town) and we’re excited to do so.
Our favourites have been The Wellington Gastropub, The Whalesbone, The Brookstreet and Les Fougeres.
This is a great way to have fantastic dining experiences.

What a great idea! I love the Wellington Gastropub and Whalesbone, but I have yet to try Brookstreet and Les Fougeres. What have been your favorite dishes?
by Jesswf on October 26, 2010 at 2:51 pm. #
I had a lobster dish at the Broostreet that I still dream about. It does not seem to be on their menu now though.
A pork tenderloin special at Les Fougeres has been a favourite too.
And despite being an oyster house….The Whalesbone has the best steak in town!

I always feel guilty straying from a restaurant’s specialty but if you say it’s the best, I’ll have to give it a try!

I’ve been dying to try Town! Maybe winning will motivate me to get out there sooner rather than later!
As for an amazing dining experience-that’d have to be this past Valentine’s Day my boyfriend (of 8 years) and I went to Murray Street for the first time and were blown away by the service, quality and uniqueness of the dishes. The particular highlight for me was the Smore’s dessert-so decadent and delicious.
Anway, we were so impressed that my boyfriend (a chef) ended up getting a job there 3 months later!

Your boyfriend is a chef at Murray Street? i can’t help being a little jealous.

One of my favourite dining experiences was when the Preston Street construction cleared up and I passed by a Korean place (Le Kim Chi, corner of Preston&Beech). I hadn’t tried Korean food before, but it smelled delicious and I kept thinking that this was such an unlikely location for a Korean restaurant.
I ended up going in the next week and devouring a large bowl of the Soondooboo (sp?): a spicy seafood stew with lots of flavour!
Everything from the warm, hospitable employees to the traditional side dishes that come with the meal made for a memorable and delicious experience.
I’ve been back a few times now and they always remember my face and recommend new dishes to try.

I’ve heard of Le Kim Chi and had no idea where it was (you’re right what an unlikely location). Sounds like a great experience, I’m excited to check it out!

I recently moved to the Elgin street area and have been meaning to visit Town. Great restaurants in the area, I’m quite impressed! My favourite dining experience so far has to be at The Exchange on Rideau (the old Elephant & Castle) Great British atmosphere, and surprisingly outstanding food. I had a Turkey sandwich that was served on sourdough bread with cranberry mayonaise, Havarti cheese and thinly sliced GrannySmith apples. Amazing combination. i recreated it at home about 5 or 6 times with my Thanksgiving leftovers. Every time my girlfriend is back in Ottawa I bring here there for lunch. Delish! Great food, great service, great atmosphere and great music!
Oh, and did I mention that they serve Steamwhistle on tap? Boo Yah!

We made an impromptu visit in Town for a date lunch back in August. http://ottawafood.blogspot.com/2010/08/lunching-at-town.html
My ‘main’ dish was their pappardelle lamb ragu. It was so delicious. I remember having so much tender lamb. So filling for a lunch. And the ‘broth’ so full of flavour. There you go, getting me salivating again.
Anyway, I couldn’t get it out of my mind. I thought it was a great way to present lamb when doing a small plates style dinner. Marc Dorion and Steven Wall inspired us to try something similar and so this weekend we made our version of their pappardelle lamb ragu. What a hit!! We were thrilled that there were leftovers for the following night. http://ottawafood.blogspot.com/2010/10/cozy-autumn-dinner-party.html
I am still craving that lamb ragu despite our recent weekend fix. The sunny day back in August was special too because hubby and I just decided last minute to have a date at lunch on a crazy Friday. We went to a place we hadn’t been to before. And it was hip! Isn’t that we are supposed to do as couples? Be impulsive? Sometimes we get too busy and forget. I am glad our impulse date was a perfect lunch at Town.

I never have luck recreating meals I’ve had at restaurants, good for you for making it work! Moving to the Elgin street area was a good decision food wise, have you been to Oz Kafe or the Manx pub? so cozy!
by Jesswf on October 26, 2010 at 3:53 pm. #
Nope. Haven’t made it to Oz Kafe or Manx but I do hear good things. On the wishlist!

Great dining experience I’ve had in the past year. There are many, enough to fill a blog in fact…
For standouts, I’ve a tie, so hope not to disqualify myself by sharing both…
The first…After my better half and I visited the Flour Shoppe to cover their opening, meet its lovely owner, and snap photos, we left the cupcakery, walking along Bank Street. We would pass a familiar Korean restaurant called the Dolsot Cafe, which we have been promising ourselves we would visit again.
Promise kept, we ordered and ate a lunch of home-style Korean food. Between the warmth the restaurant’s staff showed us and the food we were served, it felt like we were invited into the home of a Korean family. Everything was made from scratch from stock to kimchi, be it long simmered or long pickled. Everything was delicious! Whoever said good laid back food can’t charm a food blogger needs to visit the Dolsot Cafe.
The second…For my birthday, I had dinner at Murray Street Kitchen. There, I partook of my annual charcuiterie plate, a heart clogging tradition I started when I turned 30. Dinner eaten and friends wistfully singing praises of Chef Mitton’s food, I thought it was time to leave.
Instead, I was presented with cake, a slice cut from one that had fallen apart on its journey from the bakery of its birth to the restaurant. My better half had planned a surprise.
Chef Mitton’s team discovered the disaster and did their best to patch the cake for me. My plated slice came with good wishes from the kitchen, written in chocolate. It may have been a broken cake, patched with whipped cream, but someone had cared to do something about it. It means something to me, someone who has eaten in many of Ottawa’s restaurants, both fine food and otherwise.
That said, friends, both in the food industry and out, have said good thing of Towne. I’ve never been.
Kelly! If I win, let’s double, you, Paul, me and Jenn!

For anyone unfamiliar with the Dolsot Cafe it’s between Flora and Catherine on the west side of Bank st.

Oh and Anne, the Manx is a must visit!
by Don (@foodiePrints) on October 26, 2010 at 8:59 pm. #
I’m with Don on this one: As a regular contributor to Ottawa Foodies, I can attest to many a fine dining experience.
For this one, though, I would go all the way to Barcelona and a fabulous tapas bar, called Pinxto. It was so good the first night that we went back the second. The food was fresh and they did only a few tapas, but did them so well. In fact, when we went to town. back in the summer, it reminded me of Pinxto for all the right reasons. (On the other hand, I would love to go back, for I didn’t get a chance to try their dessert and the rice pudding sounds incredible!!!)
by Kaitlin on October 26, 2010 at 9:43 pm. #
The rice pudding is such a treat! wine soaked cherries and pistachios.. I think I need to go there for lunch.

My best meal this year was a steak my husband cooked for me this summer. It was perfectly cooked and simply amazing.

My favorite dining experience of the last year was an anniversery diner with my spouse at la baccara restaurant in casino du hull, It was an amazing diner. We decided to go all out and chose the chefs choice with the accompanying wine for each course. Needless to say its not something we will forget.

I’m sort of torn. It’s been a good year with many food highs.
Taylor’s Food and Wine bar restored my faith in a good bisque with their creamy leek soup of the day.
The dining experience was good, professional, courteous, skilled, fast and the company good but for best food and ambiance of an experience?
An evening at Sweet Art on Dalhousie with friends, rolling our own summer rolls, trying each other’s food, catching up on the news. All the ingredients fresh and service warm and friendly.
