BtS// Ottawa Citizen’s Style Magazine
by Mallory on May 2, 2012
This past Sunday we provided jewellery to Ottawa’s Style Magazine for a photo shoot styled by, Justyna Baraniecki. If you haven’t heard of Justyna by now it’s not due to a lack of effort on her part. She is a marketing specialist/art director/model/editorial stylist/fashion show producer and photographer just to name a few. Be sure to take a look at her blog, online portfolio, Facebook Page and of course she also tweets.
The shoot was shot by Joel Bedford (http://www.joelbedford.ca) with models from Models International Management and a professional beauty duo that was on set keeping everyone looking fantastic.
Justyna was wonderful enough to provide us with some behind the scenes shots from Sunday night’s shoot. We leant Justyna an array of pieces; however, my personal favourite is the spectacular Alexis Bittar neckpiece that you can swoon over below.
This feature will be in the Ottawa Citizen’s Style Magazine Summer 2012 edition and will be out on news stands in June.
Design Spotlight// Anouk Jewellery
by Mallory on April 26, 2012
Magpie Jewellery is lucky enough to work with an array of unique and extremely talented jewellery designers. One such designers is Moscow-born, Israel-raised and now Toronto-based, Anat Kaplan. Anat is the designer behind Anouk Jewelry. Anouk loves to do custom consultations and welcomes working with customers on designing beautiful, one of a kind pieces.

She will be visiting us from Toronto for one day only this Saturday at our Westboro location where our Anouk Jewelry selection is exclusively housed. If you are in Westboro be sure to drop by, say hello and try on a few of these beautiful pieces.
Below we have featured a few of the stunning pieces currently available at our Westboro location as well as a few Q&A with Anat to get everyone warmed up for Saturday!
What is your background in the jewellery industry?
Anat: I have an arts background, and hold a masters in art history. I came to jewellery design after years of painting, sculpting, and working in the art industry. As an artist, I was always drawn to textures and colours, and I found the perfect way to express my fascination, using precious metals and gemstones.
What materials and processes do you use in your collections?
Anat: I work with gold and platinum mostly, and I’m especially drawn to yellow gold, as it reminds me of the ancient treasures of Greece and Rome. I combine these metals with diamonds, and a variety of precious and semi-precious stones, such as aquamarines, emeralds, sapphires, labradorites, opals, and many more.. My pieces are sculpted by hand and cast. I find that this process sets my creativity free, and allows for artistic freedom. I also stand behind the casting process as it uses mostly recycled gold.
Can you tell us a little bit about raw diamonds?
Anat: “Raw diamonds” are my small way of changing the world. These stones are so beautiful and magical in their natural state, that I see it as my calling to share them with the world, and raise awareness to the fact that you don’t have to cut a diamond to enjoy its beauty. These stones were here long before us and will remain long after us. However, when diamonds are traditionally processed, sometimes more than half of the stone goes to waste. I believe that the most respectful way to treat them, is to enjoy them as is, and pass them on to the next generation.
How would you characterize your jewellery designs and who is your target market?
Anat: My pieces are hand-sculpted and therefore have a very organic and natural feel. They spark the imagination by evoking ancient artifacts, sunken treasures, and natural elements. They bring out the raw, untouched beauty of the gems and metals.
My target market is environmentally conscious individuals who are looking for distinct, non-traditional pieces of wearable art, that they can personally connect to and treasure for a lifetime.
What kind of woman wears Anouk jewellery?
Anat: A woman who is highly individual, creative, and unconventional, who is inspired by art and natural beauty. She is perhaps spiritual, or artistic, or both…
What do you get up to when you’re not thinking about or experimenting with jewellery?
Anat: When I’m not creating jewellery, I spend time with my most wonderful creation, my daughter Liya, who is going to be 3 this summer. She is the funniest and most adorable person I know – she is my biggest inspiration! Her daddy is pretty cool too.
I also like painting , photography, and I’m totally addicted to Pinterest.

Bittar Bangles
by Aliya on April 26, 2012
Stacking bangles is nothing new. Layering arm candy has been a majorly popular trend for a little while now. But stacking Alexis Bittar bangles never fails to look anything but absolutely fabulous! So much so, he’s made Edina and Patsy from the television show Absolutely Fabulous the faces of his new collection.
The latest batch of Bittar bangles will be making their presence known in stores by tomorrow (along with the matching earrings, necklaces and rings), but here’s a sneak peek:
Amazing, right?
Make sure you stop by to see them in person.
And if you have a second, check out that Ab Fab photoshoot here.
Staff Story- Featuring Caelen Ellis!
by Gaelyn on April 23, 2012
I recently asked Caelen Ellis of Fluid Jewellery, if he wouldn’t mind making his diamond .05pt studs with a slight variation; rose gold and black diamonds instead of the more traditional white or yellow gold with white diamonds. He got really into the idea and asked if he could try out some new ways of setting he was playing around with. Fluid is such a beautiful line, I figured I couldn’t lose by letting him get creative.
The result was even better then I imagined- he set the round brilliant cut diamonds upside down- leaving the culet (bottom point and final facet) exposed so it spikes out. It looks unbelievably cool. Other winning details include the lovely tone of the rose gold and the pocking/detailing around the setting.
They aren’t mine quite yet (yay layaway!), so if you are in the Rideau Centre and would like to take a peek at them or the rest of Caelen’s collection please feel free to drop by! I love showing them off.
Magpie Jewellery on TV with TFO’s Ruby
by Mallory on April 23, 2012
A month ago we introduced you to our district manager and jewellery designer, Walter van der Molen. Shortly there after we published a behind the scenes shot of Walter being interviewed by a large TV crew that took over our Westboro location for the better part of an afternoon.
Episode 24 of TFO’s Ruby features Mr. van der Molen speaking on our custom jewellery service offerings here at Magpie Jewellery. The video clip is in French and provides you with a brief look at the process involved in designing your own custom jewellery. Remember, custom design isn’t just for engagement rings as you can see here and here.
Extra! Extra! Read All About It!
by Sarah on April 21, 2012
You can’t walk by a magazine stand these days without seeing the news about Hollywood’s favourite power couple… Brad Pitt & Angelia Jolie are engaged!
The magnificent emerald cut diamond is flanked by tapering baguette diamonds and is estimated to be at least worth $250, 000. Pitt took at least a year to design the piece which became an instant sensation for copycat ring lovers world wide.
Magpie asks: “Would you wear this ring?”
Put A Ring On It
by Mallory on April 20, 2012
Yesterday the office was a buzz with a ring buy and from this photo below it’s easy to see why. Rings can be like candy to some of us girls.
We tweeted a photo of a few of them gems that will be in our stores soon, but it’s only a mini sneak preview; these beauties need to be tried on and enjoyed in person.
