10 Years Ago!

by Erin on November 19, 2013

For a change of scenery Martin and I used to like to take the bus from the market to the Glebe. We lived and shopped in the market and had the store in the Rideau Centre so it felt like we were ‘getting out of town’! This was before we had a car.

We realized that we liked the vibe, the people and the pace, in the Glebe so much that we wanted a piece of it. Well, we weren’t moving there, but a store? We could do that!

A spot came up shortly after, right beside the Body Shop between 3rd and 4th avenue, in the heart of the Glebe. At the time, those 5 words (Right-beside-the-Body-Shop) were music to our ears. What better neighbours could you have?!?!

10 years later, and we are still very much in love with the Glebe. It has been a true honour for us to be part of one of Ottawa’s oldest, well loved, most established of Ottawa’s neighbourhoods for 10 years. Even though we didn’t move house to the Glebe, it certainly feels like home to us.

Biko in Westboro!

by Jess WF on June 28, 2013

One of Magpie’s newest lines is officially at our Westboro store! Come and visit us this weekend to see Biko paired with another one of our eco-friendly lines, Pyrrha. Biko has been a favourite at our Rideau and Glebe stores and our Webstore for a while so we are super excited to welcome these cool colourful beauties to Westboro.

We’d love to see you this weekend, on Canada Day both our Glebe and Westboro stores will be closed, but our Rideau Centre store will be open from 10am-6pm! And of course our webstore is always open.

Happy Canada Day!

How To Wear It: Attending An All White Event

by Mallory on June 19, 2013

For this weeks edition of How To Wear It we have teamed up with the darling Ottawa based, fashion power house couple behind style blog, ourMode. Let me introduce you to CJ and Katherine.

CJ hails from the GTA, is currently completing his BCom degree at Carleton and hopes to also complete a law degree; Katherine is a Markham local and a recent graduate of McMaster University’s Biology Honours program, she is currently continuing her studies of science at Ottawa U. – she’s hoping to become a veterinarian!

In addition to working through demanding school programs, this couple manages to find the time necessary to consistently feed their blog with superb original content – using our nation’s capital city as their backdrop. Though both share a love of beautiful aesthetics and fashion they are not self proclaimed fashionistas. With attainable (though killer) style, CJ and Katherine’s blog will inspire you through their approachable stance as style appreciators. They strongly believe that everyone can have their own unique style, a notion that we here at Magpie Jewellery stand behind 100%.

On Friday they will be attending Bash En Blanc. In honour, they have taken the time to show us how to suit up for an upscale all-white-everything summer party. Katherine is wearing some incredible pieces from Silver Season’s La Mer Collection and on her wrist is Alexis Bittar‘s Liquid Gold and White Small Thorne Hinge Bracelet from his Miss Havisham Collection. We love the combination of these two designers and the subtly at which the gold sets off her crisp all-white, pulled together look.

This weekend: Alexis Bittar, Art in the Park, Father’s day!

by Jess WF on June 14, 2013

Happy Friday everyone!

Today through Sunday Magpie is hosting an Alexis Bittar Trunk Show at all three locations with taxes off the full collection (including online) and a selection of 70% off items at our Westboro and Rideau Centre stores.

The New Art Festival is this weekend as well, make sure you stop by if you’re in the Glebe. Magpie’s friend/allumni Dianne Rodgers will be there with her Micro(kaleido)scope photography series.

Dianne is a gemologist, which means she has an extensive collection of gems. She specifically chooses stones with character and interesting inclusions to micro-photograph to give a unique perspective of the stones. These are not to be missed!

Oh and HAPPY FATHER’S day to all you dad’s out there. How are you going to celebrate??

How To Wear It: Alexis Bittar

by Mallory on June 12, 2013

Last week we worked with local and stylish blogger, Carolynn Lacasse as she prepared herself to attend the Governor General Performing Arts Awards here in Ottawa. She was dripping in iconic Alexis Bittar Lucite pieces that were the perfect accompaniment to her gorgeous Designers Remix one shoulder, mid thigh little black dress.

Take a look at how she wore these beautiful pieces  here: http://bit.ly/ZodeXS

If you find yourself lusting over Alexis Bittar we must encourage you to check out our Alexis Bittar Pop-Up Shop happening this Friday-Sunday simultaneously at all three of our locations here in Ottawa! You will be able to enjoy a glorious selection of delicious designs that will only be in stores for three days, taxes off new collection pieces and some great sales on past season’s collections.

Also, right now on our Facebook Page you have the opportunity to win the beautiful Floral bangle shows below. Visit our Facebook page by clicking here to find out how to participate!

Don’t miss out on your opportunity to see a wide selection of pieces from this talented New York designer.

Five Things {in Vegas}

by Jess WF on June 10, 2013

Last weekend our resident gemologist and head buyer Jackie Taylor flew to Vegas for the JCK Show and the Couture Show at the Mandalay Bay hotel. We’re always on the lookout for interesting designers and new ideas for displaying jewellery. It’s also a great time to say hi to designers we carry and to see what they’ve got lined up for the next season.

Alexis Bittar Fall 2013 Preview. I can’t wait to see this in real life. The photo is a little bit dark, but in real life Bittar’s jewellery is nothing if not vibrant and bold.

Jackie has had her eye on Yasuko Azuma for a while now, Magpie is very interested in getting to know her and her elegant and intricately detailed collection. {What do you think?}

I love the drama and vibrancy of this display! The display isn’t Magpie’s look, but it definitely draws you in.

As does the Enchanted Forest entrance to the private Pandora room, displaying their Fall collection. Which lead to the Winter Wonderland, inspired by Pandora’s Winter collection.

{you’ll have to wait until Fall and Winter to see what the jewellery is!}

Jackie came back totally inspired by the displays {think wood, think nature} and very interested in a few new lines of engagement rings, stay tuned, we’ll want your opinion.

Go West.

by Jess WF on June 7, 2013

This weekend marks the 10th anniversary of Westfest and we’re super excited about the all Canadian lineup of artists playing this year. Click here for the full schedule of performers and activities. Magpie will have a case of jewellery on sale outside for the weekend, hope to see you there!

For now, enjoy this video by Toronto’s Elliot Brood, who’ll be performing tonight at 9:40pm

If you’re in the Glebe this Sunday check out the Urban Craft fair. Back by popular demand will be Loo’s Diner {a pop up vegan diner brought to you by Auntie Loo’s}. I’ll be helping guest Chef Nina Jensen get her vegan Jamaican Patties ready this weekend, can’t wait!

Natural Beauty and Inspiration

by Jess WF on June 6, 2013

A few months ago I posted about Satin & Snowflakes getting in touch with Magpie for a photoshoot, well the photos are in! Check out these gorgeous photos taken by AMBphoto and styled by Brittany Frid.

When photographer Anne-Marie Bouchard and I began planning this shoot, we shared a common vision: a design with simple and organic elements, soft lines, and classic elegance in a setting of natural beauty. Using neutral colors accented with soft gold, grayed jade, and plenty of lush florals, we created a romantic, fresh environment filled with soft, organic details that tied the whole design together.

Our team of vendors could not have been more gracious and inspiring, and our vision came to life very quickly and easily. Our venue, Le Belvédère, is an extraordinary eco-friendly venue perched on the edge of a cliff in Quebec’s Wakefield, and it has the most beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding rolling hills. It was the perfect backdrop for our shoot.
